Q&A with Designer Barb Fishpaw

What made you join Celebrating Home?
I joined our company because I fell in LOVE with our product. I didn’t even understand our marketing plan at first, it didn’t matter to me, I loved the product and believed others would love the product too and they did. When each new catalog comes out, the WORLD STOPS, I can’t wait to dive into it and as soon as I’ve turned the last page, I start all over again. I still get just as excited today about each new catalog & product line as the day I started.

What types of things have you been able to do with the money you have earned from Celebrating Home?
There are so many wonderful things, but the one we’re most proud of, is being able to put both of our sons thru college. I married my husband John when I was 18 and sadly don’t have a college degree, John went to night school after the Army. We wanted so much more for our sons and we were able to give both boys the education we didn’t receive.

What was your biggest challenge in getting started?
It’s hard to believe now, but my biggest challenge was convincing my husband, family and friends to take my business seriously. I empathize with other designers who don’t have that immediate support. But once everyone knew how committed I was and once I started sharing the income I was receiving they soon became my biggest fans and are still to this day!

What does success mean to you?
NOTHING feels better than seeing someone on your team achieve a goal or award or earn an income that is making a difference in their family. Success is feeling that you’ve made a difference (big or small) in the life of a customer, hostess, or a designer on your team. Success is a feeling that’s hard to express but you know in your heart you are exactly where God wants you to be.

Tell us about your family.
We have 2 wonderful sons who have grown up in party plan. I believe they have a special relationship with their Dad that they wouldn’t have had, if it weren’t for me out doing parties some nights. We were both “room parents” boyscout leaders, and t-ball coaches. Being in party plan gave us the opportunity to be available to do things other parents couldn’t do. Our sons have jobs where they work with the public, and are very good with people. I like to think maybe a “little” bit of party plan rubbed off on them. We are very proud of our sons. I’ve been married to John for 36 years, he’s my best friend & partner in the business. He’s mostly a “behind the scenes” kind of guy but he’s always right beside me when I need him. I truly could not do this business without him. My parents are a huge part of our lives and business too. My Mom works at our home almost every day and Dad is at every big event helping out wherever. It’s even more Fun because my Family is such a big part of my CH family.

What was the last book you read?
BOOK??? No way, I’m a Movie kind of gal! And I’m not picky, I love movies. I am so passionate about CH that I sometimes get a little carried away so catching a movie is a nice way to take a break. My motto is “Work hard, play hard,” movies provide the “brain break” I need. We started a tradition many years ago that Friday night was our DATE NIGHT, we love to take in a movie and go out to dinner. It’s good to have some special uninteruptible moments with my husband and friends, this refreshes me and then I’m ready to jump right back into my business.

What is your favorite Celebrating Home product?
I am in love with our seasonal items, Snowmen and Scarecrows especially. We love to decorate for the Holidays, and we have many items that are special and evoke a cherished memory. I like to imagine the same thing happens when my hostesses & customers decorate their homes with the Celebrating Home items they purchased or received as gifts.

What advice from your Mom do you still take to heart today?
Since my Mom helps and supports me in my business, I have taken her advice MANY times, but at this very moment I can close my eyes and hear her say, “do one thing at a time, don’t get overwhelmed by thinking of all the things that have to be done, just concentrate on one at a time.” Wiser words were never spoken! And this isn’t exactly advice, BUT we laugh every day, no matter what is going on, we find humor in everything and WE LAUGH.
